The first contemporary show representing an international selection of Roma artists
The Open Society Institute, the Allianz Kulturstiftung and the European Cultural Foundation sponsored The First Roma Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale. With artists representing eight countries, this was the first truly European pavilion in the Biennale's history, located in an exceptional space – Palazzo Pisani Santa Marina, a typical 16th-century Venetian palace in the city’s Canareggio district.

Artists featured included, Daniel Baker, Damina and Delaine Le Bas who along with Ferdinand Koci are contributing to the Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month poster competition. If you get the chance try to catch this film. Described as the Buena Vista Social Club for Gypsy music it captures the spirit of an amazing musical culture and the heart of the musicians and singers who express it.
Shot by legendary cinematographer Albert Maysles and directed by Jasmine Dellal, this dynamic musical documentary follows five Gypsy bands from four countries who unite for the Gypsy Caravan as they take their show around North America for a six-week tour, astounding every audience they meet.
Their musical styles range from flamenco to brass band, Romanian violin to Indian folk. And with humour and soul in their voices, they celebrate the best in Gypsy culture and the diversity of the Romani people in an explosion of song and dance.

The tradition wagon may not be as common as it once was, but like vintage cars and motorcycles many fine examples are maintained and used for showing off as well as for their original purposes.
With a tradition of such strong musical talent it is hardly surprising that Gypsy musicians have earned the respect, love and admiration of some of the greatest classical composers such as Liszt, Debussy, Delibes, Vaughan Williams and many more.
Today Ireland is culturally respected worldwide as a land of music, song and dance with a thriving tradition.
