Some of the entries came with delightful drawings
Gypsies have lived for a long, long time. The Gypsies lived in the olden days. They love getting together. The Gypsies love to party. The horses like to race. The Gypsies and Roma love celebrations. The Gypsy language is called Cant. Appleby Fair sells horses and people buy them and sell jackets, jewellery, dishes and rugs. The Gypsies lived in the caravans for 4 days.
‘Hannah won this with her opening line- “Gypsies have lived for a long time – lived in the olden days!” Its important to emphasise this land is our home. She saw this in the painting before she colourfully goes on to describe horses, celebration etc.’ Jess
Over there is a massive church. There is a big clock, the time is 9.12. Some people are having a horse race in the freezing cold water. There’s lots of caravans. Gypsies like playing games a lot. A man is playing instruments in the pond. There’s two horses and one dog. Near the caravans there’s a man playing violin.
‘Adam sees the clock tower, freezing water, games and the importance of community and music.’ Jess
Gypsies and Roma love a celebration or party. Cant means language. Roma and Gypsies love to ride ponies and horses. At Appleby Fair they have horse races. At markets they sell and buy stuff. When the boy wants to marry the girl they get a coin round their necks. When they get married they are allowed to wear head scarves. You can live in caravans but you don’t have electricity. They like horses a lot. They all get together and celebrate weddings. They go to the church and sing songs. They are very Christian people. You may see them on streets and roads.
‘Leah adds her Cant to the picture of fairs, markets and horses. She describes marriage and the love of church.’ Jess
Every winner has received an invitation to the Awards Ceremony and we hope that they can attend with parents/carers and a representative from their school.
Those who cannot attend will receive their certificates and prizes by post.
