Key Stage 3

1st: Shannon, Dyffryn Comprehensive, Port Talbot

As I look at the picture it comes to life. It takes me back from olden days to the present. It reminds me of my Grandad’s story telling.

It shows the importance of celebration, religion, our love of music and dancing.

At the centre is the old fashioned Vardo showing the importance of family in our culture.

The Appleby Fair is where Travellers barter, race and sell horses. I see the splashing of horses in the river; clean and ready for sale.

My grandparents would love this picture as it traces the journey of Travellers through the ages.

‘What I’ve been looking for is how the painting comes to life – got it!’ Jess

2nd: Nicole, C/O Greenway Primary School, Cardiff

Overall the poster looks like laughter going on because everyone is smiling and having fun. It make me feel like I want to jump in because everyone looks so happy. It looks like Stowe is happening because there is trailers and stores. The horses make me think of Appleby because the horses are getting washed in the river. The parade has come out to honour the Virgin Mary, people are praying to her because she is holy and they have faith in her. Everyone is dancing and playing music and celebrating all of Gypsy life.

‘This tells me Nicole sees uplifting mood – happiness and pride.’ Jess

3rd: Erika, Newlands School, Middlesbrough

In the picture there are a lot of Gypsy people dancing and singing and playing instruments. The Gypsy people are doing the party every year.

In England lots of Gypsy people celebrate in Appleby. The people go with their horses in a river and they dance about. The people have very old fashioned caravans and horses.

I am a Gypsy and my family is as well. My family can play instruments and can sing. They really love to listen to music and to dance.

The Gypsy people are all over the world they go to play music and sing for each other.

‘Simply explains how important family values are in seen in the painting.’ Jess
